Looking back at 2014: the year in review

ThisChangesEverythingWomen and the Weston: Non-fiction award juries (and publishers) have taken heat for their lack of gender equality, but women dominated this year’s Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Non-fiction shortlist. Joining solo dude Charles Montgomery were Susan Delacourt, Naomi Klein, Paula Todd, and Kathleen Winter. Klein, who won the award for This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate (Knopf Canada), told Q&Q after the ceremony that the spirit among the finalists “was incredibly supportive. I don’t know if it is always like that, but it’s been a lovefest right from the beginning.”

Indigo closes stores, ups book sales: Indigo Books & Music reported a 5.4 per cent growth in book sales this year, the first such growth since 2010, despite shuttering seven stores. Following the closures came word that Toronto’s iconic World’s Biggest Bookstore will be converted to a restaurant row, while the Richmond Street location is slated to become a Michael’s Arts & Crafts store.
