Five books – four of them published or distributed by Penguin Random House Canada – have been named to the shortlist for the 2023 Scotiabank Giller Prize.
Jury members Ian Williams and Sharon Bala announced the shortlist at an event in Toronto on October 11.
The finalists for this year’s $100,000 prize are:
- Sarah Bernstein, Study for Obedience (Knopf Canada/Penguin Random House Canada)
- Eleanor Catton, Birnam Wood (McClelland & Stewart/Penguin Random House Canada)
- Kevin Chong, The Double Life of Benson Yu (Atria Books/Simon & Schuster)
- Dionne Irving, The Islands: Stories (Catapult Press/Penguin Random House Canada)
- CS Richardson, All the Colour in the World (Knopf Canada/Penguin Random House Canada)
The shortlisted books were chosen from a longlist of 12 books announced last month.
The winner of this year’s prize will be announced at a gala in Toronto on November 13.
Williams and Bala are joined on this year’s jury by fellow Canadian author Brian Thomas Isaac, American author Rebecca Makkai, and British-Indian author Neel Mukherjee. This year, 145 books were submitted by publishers across Canada – a record number.
