Agony Editor: Check in with yourself before checking out your sale numbers

Dear Agony Editor,

Every few months, I get a templated email from my publisher, reminding me that I can review a report of my book sales. I’ve never clicked through, and I’m not sure I want to. I could be pleasantly surprised, but I also know my books aren’t bestsellers. I’m afraid seeing the number will depress me. But I also don’t want to be afraid of reality. Do you think I should click through?

Signed,

By the Numbers

Dear By the Numbers,

Self-editing is a skill all writers need to learn. Writers need to be able to ask themselves crucial questions like, “Is my story still on track?” or “Can I turn these two chapters into one chapter?” or “If my character’s heart jumps into their throat, how would they breathe?”

There’s a lot to be said for self-editing in the non-writing world, too. It means checking in with yourself, especially before doing something that could negatively impact your emotions. For example, say you’re in a terrible mood and decide it’s a good time to scroll through your Goodreads book reviews. Or you’re full of self-doubt and choose to visit your local bookstore to see how many copies of your book they have – or don’t have. Maybe you’re pondering the value of your work and then look up how many ratings your nemesis has on Amazon.

All this to say, before you go ahead and check your sales numbers, take a moment and tune in to how you’re feeling. Remember that book sales are not entirely within your control. Ask yourself if knowing the number of books you’ve sold is important, or if it’s information you need to know.

When it comes to life, I agree it’s best not to be afraid of reality. There’s something to be said about developing a thick skin, especially if you’re a writer. But I also think there’s no point reducing your blood, sweat, and tears to a number.

Writing isn’t about the books you sell; it’s about the readers you reach. Remind yourself of that before you make any clicks.
