Agony Editor: Keep calm and write on

Dear Agony Editor,

I’m about to start writing my third novel, and I’m terrified. The process of writing my previous novels was fraught with mistakes, wasted time, and angst. I want to be certain I’m on a better path with this next book, but I don’t know how to get that reassurance. Any tips?

Signed,

When in Doubt

Dear When in Doubt,

Let’s get to the hard truth: you’ll never be certain, especially if the thing you want to be certain about doesn’t yet exist. You need to stop worrying and start writing.

I suspect you weren’t very strategic with your first two novels. Undertaking a few simple but crucial steps at the start of your project can go a long way to ensuring you stay on the right path.

First, talk through your book idea with some trusted friends, ideally other writers. Take them through your story, from the beginning to the end. Even if you don’t have all the details worked out, let them know where your head is at. They might say your idea sucks (and isn’t this better to hear at the start of your project, rather than at the end?), but they might also have some great questions and suggestions for you to consider.

Then put together an outline of your book. If you don’t have enough detail to outline it by chapter, at least outline it by thirds. You should have a clear idea about what happens in your book before you start writing it.

Lastly, mistakes and bad writing are all part of the process. Give yourself permission to write badly in your first draft. That way, you keep your eye on what’s most important: getting the story out. Too often, writers spend time polishing up that first draft, but sometimes, polishing is more about procrastination. No one should see the first draft except for you. Go back to perfecting those sunset descriptions later.

Writing can be a mysterious process for even the most accomplished writers. And the writing process for each book is unique. Look back on what you may have done wrong with your earlier novels and bring those lessons forward.

As much as you might feel terror, I hope you also feel excitement. That’s usually the best sign you’re on the right track. Good luck.
