The SFU Publishing Program at Simon Fraser University is launching the Greg Younging Publishing Award Endowment. The award will cover an Indigenous student’s tuition for the 18-month master of publishing program.

The new award was announced at the first annual Greg Younging Conversation, an annual talk about Indigenous voices in publishing held by SFU. Younging was the first Indigenous graduate of the school’s master of publishing program. Though he passed away in May 2019, his influence continues to be felt through his style guide Elements of Indigenous Style: A Guidebook for Writing By and About Indigenous Peoples.

In addition to the school’s own fundraising efforts, the endowment has been financed by a $45,000 donation from Penguin Random House Canada. The award will first be presented to a student beginning their studies in fall 2025.

In December 2020, the SFU Publishing Program also launched the Greg Younging Undergraduate Award in Publishing Studies. The $1,000 award is available to Indigenous undergraduate students enrolled in the print and digital publishing program.
