Three Canadian authors are among the five writers shortlisted for the second Carol Shields Prize for Fiction.
The $150,000 (U.S.) prize, named after the American-born and Canadian-based author Carol Shields, acknowledges, celebrates, and promotes the best works of fiction written by women and non-binary writers in Canada and the United States.
The 2024 shortlisted authors are:
- Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton (McClelland & Stewart)
- Daughter by Claudia Dey (Doubleday Canada)
- Coleman Hill by Kim Coleman Foote (Zando/SJP Lit)
- Brotherless Night by V. V. Ganeshananthan (Random House)
- A History of Burning by Janika Oza (McClelland & Stewart)
Catton, Dey, and Oza were among 15 authors – six of them Canadian – longlisted for the prize last month.
In addition to the cash prize, the winner will also receive a residency at Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland. Runners-up each receive $12,500 (U.S). The winner will be announced at an event in Toronto on May 13.
Giller winner Suzette Mayr was the only Canadian author shortlisted for last year’s prize, which was won by Fahtima Asghar.
