Indigo location in B.C. the third to unionize in a month; company responds with employee incentives

Workers at a third Indigo Books & Music location have successfully unionized.

Employees at the Indigo Chapters Pinetree in Coquitlam, B.C., have voted in favour of joining the United Food and Commercial Workers union’s Local 247.

On Oct. 9, the Montréal Trust store voted to join the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union/Le Syndicat canadien des employées et employés professionnels et de bureau.

The move to unionize Canada’s largest book-retail chain and department store began in late September when Mississauga Square One workers joined the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

Yesterday, Indigo announced to employees that it will be offering a one-time wage increase (2.5 to 10 per cent) for “high-performing” staff based on years of service; updates to the benefits program; increases to employees’ quarterly incentive and discount programs; as well as 10 hours of paid sick leave and pay coverage for COVID-19 testing.

More coverage to come.
