Kim Fu and Brandon Reid shortlisted for William Saroyan International Prize for Writing

Two Canadian authors have been named to the fiction shortlist for the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing.

Brandon Reid is shortlisted for his 2023 debut novel Beautiful Beautiful (Nightwood Editions) and Kim Fu for her 2022 short story collection Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century (Coach House Books/Tin House in the U.S.).

Fu’s collection was also shortlisted for the 2022 Scotiabank Giller Prize and won the 2023 Danuta Gleed Literary Award.

The prize, which commemorates the Pulitzer Prize–winning writer and playwright, is a biennial competition jointly administered by the Stanford University Libraries and the William Saroyan Foundation that aims to encourage new and emerging writers. Newly published works of both fiction and nonfiction are eligible, with a $5,000 (U.S.) prize awarded in each category.

Winners and finalists will be announced in late summer/early fall.
