Penguin Random House Canada donates $60,000 to Black community groups

As part of a detailed “anti-racism action and accountability plan” announced on June 10, Penguin Random House Canada has committed $60,000 to Black community groups. The donation will be split evenly between the Black Legal Action Centre, the Black Health Alliance, and the Nia Centre for the Arts.

The groups were chosen “in consultation with writer and activist Desmond Cole and our BIPOC colleagues.” Cole’s book The Skin We’re In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power, published by PRHC imprint Doubleday Canada in January, has been a bestseller that topped Bookmanager’s most recent top 10 Canadian non-fiction list, which measures sales by Canadian independent booksellers.

PRHC also renewed its commitment to matching employee donations and promised “a vision for ongoing charitable support of organizations with the greatest need and potential for impact in the area of anti-racism” by June 30.
