Susie Taylor, Lisa Moore, Jack Whalen win 2024 BMO Winterset Awards

Susie Taylor has won the 2024 BMO Winterset Award for fiction and Lisa Moore and Jack Whalen have won the 2024 BMO Winterset Award for nonfiction.

Taylor was granted the prize for her short story collection Vigil  (Breakwater Books), while Moore and Whalen received the award for their book Invisible Prisons (Knopf Canada/Penguin Random House Canada).

The annual award, now in its 25th year, celebrates Newfoundland and Labrador writers across all genres, granting a $12,500 prize to the winner. This year, to celebrate the award’s anniversary, two $12,500 prizes were awarded, one for fiction and one for nonfiction, with two finalists each receiving $3,000. Ashleigh Matthews (Otherwise Grossly Unremarkable, Breakwater Books) and Sara Power (Art of Camouflage, Freehand Books) were the other two finalists on the four-title shortlist announced last month.

The award is administered by ArtsNL. This year, 30 entries were received. The jury was comprised of writers Holly Hogan, Donna Morrissey, and William Ping.

The winners were announced at a ceremony in St. John’s on April 10.
