Tanya Tagaq shortlisted for Gordon Burn Prize

Tanya Tagaq (Rebecca Wood)

Tanya Tagaq’s novel Split Tooth has been shortlisted for the 2023–24 Gordon Burn Prize.

The U.K.-based Gordon Burn Prize recognizes innovative and “forward-thinking” literature that pushes boundaries in content, style, or genre, and engages with current cultural and social concerns. Gordon Burn was a British author and journalist who was brought up in a working-class family.

Split Tooth (winner of the 2019 Indigenous Voices Award and shortlisted for the Amazon First Novel Award), was published in Canada by Viking in 2018 and in the U.K. by Sheffield-based And Other Stories in 2023.

Tagaq is one of seven writers shortlisted for the prize. The winning writer receives £10,000 (approximately $17,000 Canadian) and is offered a writing retreat of up to three months at Gordon Burn’s cottage in Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders. The winner will be announced on March 7 in Newcastle upon Tyne.
