The Bookshelf shares a video homage to literature

The Bookshelf in Guelph, Ontario, has found a fresh way to share its love and appreciation of the written word.

The multi-purpose store, which also houses a café, cinema, and a music venue, worked with local production company Ward 1 Studios to create a video representing how books provide imaginative portals to other worlds. Books and Barn Owls: What Do Books Do? features the words of authors Kyo Maclear, Markus Zusak, Michael Ondaatje, Julian Barnes, and Italo Calvino.

Bookshelf staffer Stephanie Minett wrote on the shop’s website: “As an independent bookstore, it cannot be underestimated how often we ponder new, creative ways to express our passion for language and literature. Out of countless ruminations and conversations with nearly everyone we know, we determined that an ode to books was in order…” She says they hoped to avoid heavy-handed “car commercial schmaltz,” instead striving for a more“universal and inclusive” take on the subject.

The store is also hosting a contest, offering a chance to win one of four $25 gift certificates to anyone who can answer a series of questions about Easter Eggs hidden within the video.
