Wayne Johnston wins 2023 Stephen Leacock Medal

Newfoundland writer Wayne Johnston has been named the winner of the 2023 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour.

Johnston was named the winner of this year’s prize for his memoir, Jennie’s Boy: A Newfoundland Childhood (Knopf Canada), at an event in Orillia, Ontario, on September 16. The annual award honours Canadian humour writing.

Johnston was one of three finalists for the $25,000 prize. Runners-up Susan Juby (Mindful of Murder, HarperCollins) and Zarqa Nawaz (Jameela Green Ruins Everything, Simon and Schuster Canada) each receive $4,000.
