Motive, a new crime and mystery writing festival launching in Toronto in June, will feature nearly 100 authors and more than 40 events.

The event, to be held at Harbourfront Centre from June 3 to 5, is the inaugural crime and mystery festival presented by the Toronto International Festival of Authors, and marks the organization’s return to in-person events after two years of digital programming.

“This festival is the realization of a two-year dream: when I arrived in Toronto I was struck by how passionate Canadian readers were for crime and mystery books,” TIFA director Roland Gulliver said in a release. “So it feels fitting to return to live, in-person events with the launch of MOTIVE, and to share this exceptional lineup of authors with audiences.”

The festival’s opening night will feature Canadian author Shari Lapena presenting her latest domestic suspense novel Not A Happy Family and American author Kathy Reichs presenting Cold, Cold Bones, the 21st installment of her Temperance Brennan series. The weekend lineup includes events with Canadian authors Thomas King, Nita Prose, Linwood Barclay, Beverley McLachlin, Courtney Summers, Maureen Jennings, Emily Hepditch, Daniel Kalla, Paul Palango, Félix Séguin, and Eric Thibault, as well as a spotlight on Nordic noir.

A full schedule of events is available on the festival’s website.
