Sydney Smith has been shortlisted for the 2024 Hans Christian Andersen Award.

The award is given every year by the International Board of Books for Young People (IBBY) to “an author and an illustrator whose complete works have made an important, lasting contribution to children’s literature.”

The five titles Smith is in consideration for are:

• Small in the City, Neal Porter Books
• Sidewalk Flowers, Groundwood Books
• The White Cat and the Monk, Groundwood Books
• Town Is by the Sea, Groundwood Books
• I Talk Like a River, Neal Porter Books

The two winners will be announced at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair on April 8. The medals will be presented at the IBBY Congress, August 30–September 1 in Trieste, Italy.
