Canadian graphic novelist Mariko Tamaki won Best Writer and Best Publication for Teens at the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards on July 24. Tamaki won the writing award based on her 2019 work on the graphic novel Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me with Rosemary Valero-O’Connell (Groundwood Books), Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass (DC), and an Archie (Archie) comics arc featuring a romance between Archie and Sabrina Spellman.

Laura Dean also won in the Best Publication for Teens category (among the competition, Tamaki’s own Harley Quinn). Valero-O’Connell also won for Best Penciller/Inker on the book.

Two books from Montreal press Drawn & Quarterly won: Lynda Barry’s Making Comics won Best Comics-Related Book and Best Publication Design while Ebony Flowers “Hot Comb,” from the collection of the same name, won Best Short Story. Flowers tweeted that she is the first Black woman to win in that category. Other Canadian winners included Edmonton-born Chip Zdarsky, who won Best Digital Comic for Afterlift with Jason Loo (comiXology Originals).

Usually held during ComicCon, the winners this year were instead announced on YouTube by popular superhero voice actor Phil LeMarr. Last month, the online voting for the Eisner Awards was abruptly shut down due to security concerns. A revote was held to determine the ultimate winners.
