Kate Beaton, Charlotte Schallié, and Chip Zdarsky are among the six Canadians shortlisted for the 2023 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.

The winners will be announced at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21. Nominees in this year’s 32 categories include 150 titles from more than 50 publishers.

Zdarsky, a previous winner, received three nominations: Best Writer and Best Continuing Series for Daredevil (Marvel), and Best New Series for Public Domain (Imageis).

Beaton received two nominations in the Best Graphic Memoir and Best Writer/Artist categories, both for her award-winning graphic memoir Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands (Drawn & Quarterly).

Charlotte Schallié has been nominated in the Best Reality-Based Work category for But I Live: Three Stories of Child Survivors of the Holocaust (University of Toronto Press), which she edited.

Margaret Atwood is nominated alongside David Mack in the best short story category for “Silent All These Years,” published in Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes (Z2).

Johnnie Christmas is nominated in the Best Publication for Kids (9–12) category for Swim Team (HarperAlley/HarperCollins).

Geneviève Castrée is nominated in the Best Graphic Album – Reprint category for Geneviève Castrée: Complete Works, translated by Phil Elverum and Aleshia Jensen (Drawn & Quarterly).

Castrée and Beaton’s nominations are among six garnered by the Montreal-based Drawn & Quarterly.

The annual awards given for creative achievement in comic books are named for acclaimed American comics creator Will Eisner.
